Wusthof Classic Ikon Creme 4506-0/16 is a 6-inch knife for general use. It is one of the best Wusthof utility knives that belong to premium-class professional knives, however, it can also be used in home kitchens. This knife is made by a German knife-maker based in Solingen, well-known for its high-quality products.All Wusthof precision kitchen knives are meticulously crafted. They are a pleasure to work with for both professional chefs and hobby cooks.

Despite Wusthof doesn’t usually produce models in different colors, unlike Victorinox, for instance, Classic Ikon Creme 4506-0/16 is an exception. It differs from the Wusthof Classic Ikon utility knife by a champagne-colored handle that looks luxurious. However, if you prefer a more decent design, you can buy its counterpart with the same characteristics and identical price but a black handle. This 6’’ Classic Ikon Creme 4506-0/16 review is based on my real usage experience. It’s aimed to help you sort things out and determine whether this model is suitable for you.

Design

The design reviews are always subjective, but everybody who enters my kitchen expresses his/her admiration for my new cutting masterpiece –  6’’ Classic Ikon Creme 4506-0/16 – right after taking it in their hands. I’ve already been testing this knife for 5 weeks, I just fell in love with it, and for a good reason! Obviously, the knife is of high quality and practicality, however, its design was the first thing that caught my eye when I saw this cutting tool. I used lots of chef’s knives with “classic” styling. Sometimes I found it challenging to tell the difference between them because of their dull appearance.

But Classic Ikon Creme is totally different, it looks gorgeous and stylish. The knife’s champagne-colored handle, that features an unusual brutal shape, adds elegance to the whole tool. As for me, it’s the best Wusthof utility knife in terms of design and appearance. Its forms will intrigue you and make your heart beat faster if you live to cook and respect what you cut food items with. Right from the first glance, you’ll understand that this cutting tool belongs to the premier league. Its chic handle and the glossy blade will let you know that this is not an ordinary knife but a state-of-the-art instrument. 

Classic Ikon Creme will compliment any kitchen style, it feels like an essential design element. So, don’t hide this beauty in the knife block; instead, attach it to the magnetic holder.

Blade

This knife features 6 inches long forged cutting edge made of highly alloyed chrome molybdenum vanadium steel with X50CrMoV15 steel grade, where:

  • X50 is martensitic stainless steel that holds 0.5% of the carbon that converts iron into steel and ensures hardness and strength.
  • Cr is chrome, it makes metal corrosion-resistant.
  • Mo is molybdenum, it’s a metal that increases the composition hardness
  • V is vanadium that reduces fragileness and improves corrosion resistance as well as chrome
  • 15 goes for 15% and symbolizes the entire percentage of alloying components.

The blade features the 58th Rockwell Hardness Scale rating. It means that the cutting edge is razor-sharp and keeps long-lasting sharpening. Besides, the blade is soft and flexible enough so that you can manually hone it. Such characteristics provide super high initial cutting performance. Utilizing my Classic Ikon Creme for 5 weeks, I haven’t applied manual sharpening, and the knife still passes a common paper test.

This utility knife is one of the most frequently-used cutting tools in my kitchen. That’s because its 6-inch long and 0.8-inch wide blade is suitable for cutting fruits, vegetables, and slicing meat due to the beveled form from the tip to the base. Another characteristic I appreciate in this blade is its thickness. When a blade is thin, you’ll be able to perform thinner slices; however, such a blade will be too fragile and prone to damage. Luckily, 6’’ Classic Ikon Creme 4506-0/16 boasts an optimal thickness that allows you to make thin slices while the blade is strong enough to withstand fall-offs from the countertop height without the risk of breakage.

On the left side, there is an engraved Wusthof logo, the series name – Classic, the model number – 4506-0/16, and information about the place of production – Solingen, Germany. The right side doesn’t have any information on it. Classic Ikon Creme is forged from the solid metallic brick, it ensures the knife’s perfect appearance and outstanding strength. 

Handle

The knife has a great blade with beautiful champagne-colored pads fastened to a metallic grip with three steel rivets. It forms a smooth surface with no dips or protrusions, it’s absolutely great by touch. Actually, the handle is made of a unique plastic called polyoxymethylene. This synthetic material is durable and can resist large temperature differences while keeping the knife shape and appearance in good condition for long years. On top of that, polyoxymethylene is non-slip material. This allows you to cut products safely even if you hold your cutting tool in wet hands.

The handle is 4.7 inches long, and its ergonomic design offers a comfortable feeling for a palm of any size. The top part of the handle is curved for the cook’s convenience, plus, it ensures a reliable grip. Despite a substantial weight of 0.3 lbs, this cutting tool feels well balanced. So, you won’t tire your hand even after several hours of cutting. There is a steel counterweight (metal butt) with the engraved company’s logo at the end of the handle. This metal butt is an important part of the knife. That’s why the instrument is perfectly balanced, making cutting straightforward, comfortable, and less tiring.   

Bolster

A bolster is a small thickening between a blade and a handle. Despite its small size, this element deserves a separate abstract in our review since it plays a significant role in the knife construction and design. Most importantly, the bolster protects the cook’s fingers from injuries. Next, it prevents food pieces from getting on the handle, making it slippery and impacting the grip. Generally, only forged knives can boast such a finger guard whereas a laser cutting technology can’t offer a built-in bolster.

The Wusthof Classic Ikon Creme features a half bolster. Lots of professional cooks prefer this type of finger guard since it’s as helpful as a full bolster but allows to use a blade more efficiently by slicing and chopping food items utilizing the full length of the cutting edge. Besides, a half bolster simplifies manual honing, especially when you use a whetstone because a bolster won’t collide with a whetstone surface. In 6’’ Classic Ikon Creme 4506-0/16 utility knife, the bolster is a crucial element of the full-tang blade that makes it exceptionally strong.

Wusthof Classic 4522/16 6’’ utility knife is one of the top Wusthof utility knives manufactured by the famous factory based in Solingen (the City of Blades), Germany. This factory has been known for its quality knives and knife accessories since 1894. It’s hard to believe but the company with more than 200 years’ history remains in family hands. The manufacturer adheres to its own production philosophy that preserves the best of the art of knife making. In addition to knives, the Wusthof brand manufacturers kitchen scissors, sharpeners, honing steel, cutting boards, and blocks.  

As for the Wusthof Classic 4522/16 model, it’s one of the most versatile yet quality knives I’ve ever owned. The knife is capable of handling the magnitude of tasks, that’s why it has won my heart forever. Nevertheless, before writing this review, I was testing my Wusthof Classic 4522/16 for 5 weeks, and now I’m ready to describe all its pros and cons so that you can decide whether it can meet all your needs.

Design

The appearance of the Wusthof Classic series is not its forte. All knives from this series are mainly focused on practicality and functionality rather than design. To tell the truth, when I first took this model in hand, it didn’t make me emotional. If I hadn’t known how quality and multifunctional this cutting tool was, it wouldn’t have encouraged me to buy it right away. The knife looks neither expensive nor beautiful, it’s just all right. Even the name of the series implies what it looks like. In general, the classic design never envisioned bold style elements.

However, it’s my personal opinion. Many of my friends prefer the strict design of their kitchenware, including cutlery. That’s why they appreciate knives from the Classic series and the way they highlight the true destination of the knife. So, if you prefer elegant simplicity, Wusthof Classic 4522/16 utility knife might be the right choice for you. All in all, this cutting tool offers ergonomic & functional design that is backed by a respected brand for less than $100. 

When you take this knife in hand, it feels like a premium quality piece due to its solid construction, bolster, and engraving, so I wouldn’t call its design poor. However, it’ll never become a part of your kitchen styling or separate design element. If you want a reliable, durable knife with a luxurious exterior, you should opt for Wusthof Classic Ikon Creme.   

Our 4522/16 model is not as beautiful as a cream-colored one but it was created with durability in mind as well. Besides, it costs far less. I love this strong, razor-sharp, convenient, and overall reliable knife despite its design, so let me concentrate on its functionality in my review.

Blade

Wusthof Classic 4522/16 utility knife is forged from one piece of specially tempered high carbon steel to ensure outstanding strength. The composition  (chrome molybdenum vanadium with the steel grade X50CrMoV15) makes the blade solid and provides super high initial cutting performance. Besides, it’s stain- and rust-resistant. The knife features strength and softness at the same time due to its alloying chemical elements. The cutting edge is durable and straightforward to hone manually with a whetstone or another sharpening tool.  

This model has 6 inches long full-tang tough blade. That’s why the knife won’t break even after a few years of frequent use. The hardness is 58±1 HRC, it’s a standard hardness for European blades. The 58th Rockwell hardness scale rate provides exceptionally long edge retention, the long service life of blade and sharpness. So, you won’t need to hone your knife too often; however, it depends on how carefully and how often you use the cutting tool. During my 5-week test, I was using my knife frequently for various tasks in my home kitchen. It didn’t require honing, provided great cutting performance and sharpness results.    

The knife is 11 inches (28.3cm) long and 0.8 inches (2.5 cm) wide, making it versatile and great for cutting fruits & vegetables or cutting small meats as well as mincing shallots onions, and herbs. What I like about this model is that it feels much lighter than it really is –  0.25 lbs (115 g). That’s because a full tang blade is perfectly balanced allowing you to effortlessly manipulate the cutting tool and work with it for several hours in a row without tiring your hand. 

As for me, a 6-inch length is ideal for a utility blade. It can replace a 5.5’’ knife since you can properly cut meat pieces and a 7’’ knife since it’s too short to be a utility cook’s cutting tool. That’s the main reason why I highly estimate the Wusthof Classic 6’’ knife – it’s totally universal and hyper-relevant for any kitchen. If I had to create a knife set, I would definitely include the 4522/16 model in it.    

Handle

Wusthof Classic 4522/16 knife’s handle is black, the pads are triple riveted to the handle for precise control. The rivets are unfelt by touch, making the surface flat, smooth and pleasant. The handle is made of polyoxymethylene (POM). This material is far more durable and hygienic than polypropylene – another type of plastic used for cheaper knives. One of the benefits of a polyoxymethylene handle is that it can withstand as high a temperature as 356 °F (180 °C). So, if you suddenly forget your Wusthof knife in the oven, the chances are it’ll survive. 

Additionally, the handle is strong enough to sustain the fall-off from the countertop height. It’s resistant to not only shock loads but also to oils and organic solvents. Therefore, the handle will remain its neat appearance for many years even with frequent use. The pads feature a unique curved form that prevents slipping and provides a good grip even if you hold a knife in a wet hand. The right material and classical ergonomic shape make this model convenient to work with for long hours. The knife is well-balanced and comfortable to hold due to the extra thickening on the bottom of the handle. While unusual handle form might be suitable for certain sizes of the palm or require getting used to it, Wusthof Classic’s handle is good for hands of any size. That’s another reason why many cooks like this model.  

If you ask me whether there are any disadvantages in the Wusthof Classic knife’s handle, I’ll say no, the handle is just perfect. However, it only comes in black color with no alternatives whereas other models like Classic Ikon include 2 color options: black and champagne, plus, the original wooden Ikon handle. But, let’s face it, black is the most marketable color for knives handles, so it’s hardly a drawback. Besides, the handle of the Wusthof Classic 4522/16 knife has a hand-guard, which allows you to quickly grab the tool with the right grip.           

Bolster

A bolster is a small finger guard between a blade and a handle. This small metallic thickening plays a great role in the cutting tool design. The 4522/16 model features a full bolster that protects the cook’s fingers from injury and keeps the knife balance well. It makes the cutting instrument super convenient and prevents fast hand overworking and tiredness. Furthermore, thanks to the bolster, the handle remains hygienic and non-slip since food items don’t get on it while you are cutting. However, this thickening makes the knife heavier.       

Only you decide which is better for you – a half or a full bolster, it’s the matter of taste. Whereas some cooks need a safer cutting tool to prevent finger injuries, others want more freedom to utilize the entire blade surface. In my humble opinion, a full bolster is a wiser choice for this utility knife since it’s perfect for both professional cooks and cooking enthusiasts. This way, amateur cooks have fewer chances for injury while slicing than experienced chefs.

This brand is known since 1814, and it has won respect from numerous chefs and amateur cooks from all over the world. Wusthof precision kitchen knives are of the premium quality, meticulously crafted. These knives are a pleasure to work with for both professional chefs and amateur cooks. All Wusthof knife series has ergonomic handle design to provide comfortable feelings for all different likings.

Gourmet is an affordable series of knives meant for general use in a home kitchen rather than in a professional one. Nevertheless, it boasts superior cutting characteristics, comfortable and nearly indestructible grip, a long service life of blade and sharpness. The knife’s blade is made of the material used for producing far more expensive models. 

This Wusthof Gourmet utility knife review is based on my own experience. I’m a happy owner of this knife, and I’ve been testing it for 4 weeks before writing this review. After reading it, you’ll be able to determine whether you should buy the 4114/16 model for your kitchen.

Design

To tell the truth, when I was starting this review, it was difficult for me to find proper words to describe the design of the Wusthof Gourmet 4114/16 model. I must admit that when I first took this knife in my hands,  it failed to enrapture or gratify me. It’s just a blade and a black handle, so the model looks quite simple and even boring. I would say the knife’s design is discreet. However, it doesn’t make this cutting tool bad since it was created to cut and stay sharp for a very long period.

Actually, the design of the Wusthof Gourmet series has never been its forte. All Gourmet knives, including the 4114/16 model, play a functional role and do not add beauty and style to the kitchen. You won’t be able to find something extraordinary in its appearance that will make you think this cutting tool was manufactured by the luxurious brand except for an engraved logo on the blade. This knife looks similar to hundreds of other utility knives available on the market at the same price or even cheaper. 

Gourmet is a more affordable variant of the Classic series, they are similar in terms of design. That’s why I would call the Gourmet model’s appearance “classically simple”. It’ll hardly become a part of your kitchen design or a significant styling element.

However, the plain design results in a reasonable price. Besides, the build quality of the knife is off the charts, even the most demanding users won’t be disappointed with it. Although Wusthof Gourmet 4114/16 looks ordinary, it’ll never fail when it comes to cutting or slicing food items for hours.        

Blade

Wusthof Gourmet 4114/16 utility knife blade is 6 inches long and made of chrome molybdenum vanadium steel (martensitic stainless steel) with  X50CrMoV15 grade, it’s a perfect hardness for frequent cooking at home.  The blade is optimally tempered to 56 degrees Rockwell. The steel is highly alloyed with a proper amount of carbon content, that’s why the cutting edge is strong and sharp. Besides, the knife boasts high stain and rust resistance. A wise combination of chrome, molybdenum, and vanadium makes the cutting edge soft enough so that you can hone it manually.

The full-tang blade is laser-cut from a solid metal brick, it ensures its tough assembly (the handle and blade will keep being attached forever) and makes it even stronger. Due to this, your knife will withstand tear and wear and remain intact for many years.    

Unlike the knives from the Classic series, the Gourmet utility knife requires more frequent honing. After 2 weeks of regular usage of this blade in my home kitchen, I had to sharpen it manually to keep it in a good condition. 

When I took this model in my hand first, I was surprised at how lightweight it felt. It only weighs 0.2 lbs. (89g), so you won’t tire your hand even after several hours of working with this knife. It’s totally easy to manipulate and is perfect for all-purpose kitchen tasks and “in-between” jobs, such as slicing or chopping medium-sized fruits and vegetables, and cutting smaller cuts of meat and poultry. I like the balance between the blade’s width and length – it’s 0.8 inches (2.6 cm) wide and 6 inches (15.2cm) long. As for me, it’s perfect parameters for a utility knife.     

Handle

Wusthof Gourmet 4114/16 utility knife’s handle is black with no other color options. However, black is a universal color suitable for any kitchen style, so it won’t impair even the most luxurious design. The handle pads are attached with three steel rivets and are beveled on the blade. It provides more convenience when you hold a knife. The handle surface feels flat, smooth, and pleasant since the rivets are undistinguished by touch. There are no dips, protrusions, backlashes, and creaks. The grip is sturdy and reliable. Such a construction provides not only a seamless fit but also guarantees maximum hygienic conditions.     

The thing I love, this knife’s handle is suitable for any size of the palm due to its simple, classical shape. Whether your hand is small or big, you’ll always feel comfortable when working with the 4114/16 model. The flat shape with a finger guard on the bottom allows cutting even for several hours in a row without overworking the hand. Although the knife lacks a flexure on the handle top for a better grip, it doesn’t impact the overall user experience.

I was impressed when I learned that the melting temperature of this plastic is 356 °F (180 °C). It means that if you accidentally forget your knife in the oven, there are chances to save it. Furthermore, polyoxymethylene withstands shock loads such as falling from the countertop; it’s resistant to oils and organic solvents. Due to these characteristics, the handle will keep a nice appearance for years. The handle is non-slip, making it reliable and providing a firm grip even if you grab the knife with wet hands.    

Price

Wusthof Gourmet 4114/16 utility knife is one of the cheapest Wusthof kitchen knives, it costs not more than $50 excluding shipping costs. Despite its mediocre appearance and only 56 HRC, you still get a high-quality cutting tool from a reliable German brand. Personally, I consider it the best utility knife under $50. It’s totally fair price for chrome molybdenum vanadium steel and the overall quality of this cutting tool.

The 4114/16 model is meant for home use rather than for pro kitchens. The knife is easy-to-manipulate, lightweight, and cheap. It boasts a razor-sharp hardened stainless steel edge which doesn’t require honing for quite a long time – a few weeks or even a month, depending on how often you use your knife. This cutting tool features an ordinary European design with an ergonomic handle, made for comfort and control. To sum up, if you want a quality, reliable, practical, and convenient 6-inch utility knife, the Wusthof Gourmet 4114/16 model is well worth your attention.
